Who We Are
The McKinney Legacy Neighborhood Association (MLNA) was established in 2023 as a culmination of efforts by resident advocates to foster a strong community spirit. The Legacy Neighborhoods comprise five historically Black and Hispanic areas in East McKinney: Lewisville, La Loma (also known as Lively Hill), Mouzon, Rockwall, and Wilcox. These neighborhoods have historically fractured trust with the City of McKinney, and MLNA aims to address that through transparent communication, advocacy, and collaboration.
What We Do
Through various methods, MLNA shares valuable resources, allows residents to voice concerns, and encourages community engagement. Some of our efforts include:
-
Community Meetings
- These meetings are an opportunity for East McKinney residents to stay aware of issues facing our neighborhoods. These meetings also offer an opportunity to voice concerns, ask questions, and engage directly with city staff who routinely present relevant topics for our board.
-
Community Events
- Events are an opportunity to connect with our neighbors, foster a spirit of togetherness, and encourage active involvement in the community. Past events include our recent Summer Nightz series, hosted at various parks around the east side through the summer, our Fall Festival, and National Night Out in partnership with McKinney PD.
-
Community Advocacy
- We firmly believe that our voices are stronger when we come together and empower our community to join us in our advocacy. The MLNA board routinely meets with city officials (staff and council members) to keep informed of issues facing our community and speak up for our needs and wants. We strongly encourage our neighbors to attend City Council meetings, public hearings, and more to stay involved and civically engaged.
-
Collaboration
- As a board, we value collaboration with local government, businesses, and community partners to address issues in our neighborhoods and foster a positive way forward together. We utilize these collaborations to find resources for our neighbors and ensure support for our community. In August 2025, we were able to collaborate with local businesses to sponsor a Back-To-School event that provided nearly 300 students with backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts.
Why It Matters
Our plans for the future are big and we need your support! We have hopes to grow our board and continue engaging with our community in meaningful and impactful ways. Currently, we are funded by the Neighborhood Engagement Grant through the City of McKinney. This has been a wonderful source of support for us as we have gotten started and built MLNA into a nonprofit. In order to continue growing, we need additional support to ensure we're able to fund a variety of projects that will serve to promote, protect, and enhance the safety, historical value, and welfare of our neighborhoods.
