In Texas, far too many low-income Black and Hispanic women face heartbreaking barriers to quality maternal healthcare. While 77% of White women in Texas receive prenatal care in the first trimester, only 64% of Hispanic and 60% of Black women do. These inequities have devastating consequences: in 2023, 1 in 5 Texas babies was born to a mother receiving inadequate prenatal care, and Black infants were twice as likely to be born with low birth weight or not survive their first year of life.
At LBU Community Clinic, we are working to change that.
In 2024, LBU provided prenatal care to 2,697 underserved pregnant women through 15,830 visits, most of whom are uninsured or underinsured. Thanks to early care and our culturally competent, whole-person approach, 94.2% of the 1,642 live births from LBU patients were born at a healthy birth weight (≥5.5 lbs), helping break the cycle of poor outcomes that too often affect marginalized communities. Additionally, 73.5% of patients entered care in their first trimester, dramatically outperforming state averages for minority women.
But the need is growing and so is the challenge.
LBU is a lifeline for thousands of women and children who would otherwise go without care. With your support, we can continue to provide prenatal and postpartum care to every woman who needs it, regardless of her ability to pay.
Give today to ensure every mother and baby in our community receives the care they deserve. Every mother deserves a safe birth and every baby deserves a healthy start.
