$65,000 Goal

Literacy Achieves, founded in 1997 as Vickery Meadow Learning Center, began with a simple but powerful purpose: to help adult immigrants and refugees learn English in one of Dallas’ most diverse and high-need neighborhoods.

Today, Literacy Achieves has grown from one neighborhood learning center into a community-rooted organization serving adults, young children, and families across Dallas neighborhoods of highest need and online. Each year, Literacy Achieves serves more than 1,083 adult students and 277 young children through English language learning, literacy instruction, early childhood education, family literacy, and community-building programs.

Our mission is grounded in the belief that language opens doors. When adults gain English and literacy skills, they gain greater access to work, school, healthcare, civic life, and connection. When parents learn, children benefit. Through our two-generation approach, Literacy Achieves equips both parents and children with the tools they need to build confidence, strengthen family stability, and create pathways toward opportunity.

Approximately 230 dedicated volunteers teach all adult classes, offering not only instruction, but encouragement, consistency, and respect. Their work helps create learning environments where students are welcomed, seen, and supported as they pursue their goals.

Research from the National Institutes of Health affirms that a mother’s reading level is one of the strongest predictors of her child’s future academic success, even beyond neighborhood or family income. That is why Literacy Achieves invests in the whole family. By supporting adult learners and young children together, we help strengthen generations.

Our Funding Priorities

Your North Texas Giving Day gift helps Literacy Achieves meet students where they are and move them toward where they dream to be. This year, we are focusing on two critical funding priorities: expanding our online learning platform and strengthening workforce development pathways.

1. Expanding Access Through Online Learning

Many Literacy Achieves students face barriers that make in-person learning difficult, including transportation challenges, work schedules, childcare needs, health concerns, and personal safety concerns. For some students, coming into a classroom is not always possible — but their desire to learn remains strong.

With your support, Literacy Achieves can continue building and strengthening our online learning platform so students can access English classes, literacy instruction, and learning support wherever they are. A stronger online platform allows us to provide more flexible class options, maintain continuity during disruptions, support students who do not feel safe coming into the building, and extend our reach beyond the walls of our campuses.

When learning is accessible, students do not have to choose between safety and opportunity.

2. Building Workforce Development Pathways

English language learning is often the first door. Workforce development is the next.

Many of our adult students are working hard in entry-level positions while carrying the dreams, responsibilities, and hopes of their families. With stronger English, digital literacy, job readiness, and career navigation support, students can move toward better employment, greater stability, and upward mobility.

Funding will help Literacy Achieves grow workforce development programs that support students as they prepare for new opportunities, strengthen workplace communication, build confidence, explore career pathways, and move from entry-level jobs into positions with greater earning potential and long-term possibility.

Your gift helps students gain more than language. It helps them gain access to work, advancement, independence, and a stronger future for their families.

Together, we can open doors to learning, safety, stability, and opportunity.
