Learning Forward is an education-focused nonprofit in Texas committed to building every educator's capacity to establish and sustain high-quality professional learning so that every student has access to high-quality teaching and learning. As the only membership association exclusively focused on effective professional learning for pre-K-12 educators, Learning Forward serves thousands of members while simultaneously influencing the broader education field at all levels of the education system.
Learning Forward is known both nationally and internationally for its Standards for Professional Learning, which it developed with practitioners; research organizations; teacher associations; and higher education and school systems at the local, state, provincial and international levels. Through adoption or adaptation, these standards have been used by state, provincial, federal and national organizations to create guidelines that promote high-quality professional learning for educators. The 11 standards work within a framework to outline a system that results in improved educator practices and improved student results.
Learning Forward shows educators how to plan, implement, and measure high-quality professional learning so they and their team can achieve success with their system, their school, and their students.
Many school systems do not have structured opportunities to learn from each other across organizational lines. The Systems That Succeed Summit is a practitioner-led convening that brings together leaders from high-performing traditional public and charter school systems to share what is actually working for students, in their own words, with evidence.
The Dallas-Fort Worth region sits at a remarkable intersection. It is home to some of the state’s most improved traditional public-school districts and a thriving and diverse charter school sector, yet it is also a region where the professional learning infrastructure has not ensured that these successes are shared across systems.
Research consistently shows that the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders are the top two school-related factors in student success. Many North Texas education leaders, though, have limited structured access to the kind of practitioner knowledge that could accelerate their own improvement. They know that high-performing systems exist. What they need is a credible, accessible way to learn from them.
Learning Forward believes that successful leaders create and sustain a culture of learning when educators understand their students' historical and societal contexts, embrace student assets through instruction, and foster relationships with students, families and communities. Moreover, professional learning results in excellent outcomes for all students when educators: identify and address their own perspectives and beliefs, collaborate with colleagues who hold various perspectives, prioritize the learning needs of all students and educators, establish expectations for everyone's learning, create structures to ensure access to learning opportunities, and sustain a culture of support for all staff.
