About Us

Healthy Futures of Texas envisions a Texas where all teens reach their full potential by determining whether and when to become a parent.

To build this reality, teens need access to medically and scientifically accurate sex education, access to affordable contraception and healthcare, and the agency to act on their decisions.

We provide tools for young people to make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health and establish healthy relationships. Now, more than ever, prevention is critical! Teens and parents need access to information and resources to make the best choices for themselves.

It's time to Talk About It!

Who We Are

Perhaps you know us by our previous name, Ntarupt, the North Texas Alliance to Reduce Unintended Pregnancy in Teens. Last summer, we merged with Austin based Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and San Antonio based Healthy Futures of Texas under the name Healthy Futures of Texas. We are comprised of nearly 50 professionals with expertise in policy, research, health education, healthcare delivery, communications, and continuing education for youth-serving professionals. Our team members are based in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and the Rio Grande Valley.

While we are now statewide, we maintain a strong local presence with community based and community informed services throughout North Texas.

Mission

The mission of Healthy Futures of Texas is to improve the well-being of young Texans through equitable access to sexual health education, contraception, and resources.

Needs

Your support will help expand our impact through the following initiatives:

- Youth Education: We provide science-based sexual health education both in school settings and through collaborations with community based partner organizations.

- Parent Education: We know having "the talk" can be just as awkward for parents as it is for their kids. We give parents the information and communication skills to become the trusted and knowledgeable caregiver their children need them to be. Your NTGD gift helps ensure "the talk" can happen as often as needed.

- Public Awareness: Help raise awareness among teens about specific topics related to sexual and reproductive health, like consent, healthy relationships, STI prevention, and birth control.

- Systems-Level Change: Through our "Texas Is Ready" initiative, we work with individuals who want to see change take place in their local communities, and we consult with school districts to help them form and sustain School Health Advisory Committees (SHACs) to guide curriculum implementation. While Healthy Futures has developed its own curricula, it's important to note our Texas is Ready effort does not promote any particular reproductive health curriculum.

Equity Statement

Due to historical economic and health inequities, teen pregnancy not only intersects with poverty, but also with race. Teens experiencing barriers caused by racism are one of the groups most likely to become pregnant as teens. Disproportionately high teen birth rates and maternal mortality rates reflect the many health disparities faced by women of color in Texas and nationally.

The Healthy Futures Texas (HFTX) board and staff reflect a strong commitment to equitable and inclusive decision-making. We strive to center local communities through all the ways we engage in our work. Our anti-racism journey is ongoing and is essential to the service of our mission.

Pregnancy prevention strategies must be culturally appropriate to be effective. Therefore, we coordinate closely with organizations embedded in the communities that have a deep understanding of the cultures and traditions, and we vet curricula with a culturally competent and anti-racism lens and include additional support on issues related to LGBTQ youth and trauma-informed program delivery.

To help ensure that our efforts address the larger social structures that impact sexual health education and access to contraception, Healthy Futures of Texas works within a framework for inclusivity and empowerment that acknowledges the barriers to access of healthcare created by the complicated history of abuse and mistreatment of Black and Brown women’s bodies in reproductive medicine.
