More About Us

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal, neuro-degenerative, genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain causing the deterioration of physical and mental abilities. Children of a parent with HD have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene. In 1967, the dynamic and determined Marjorie Guthrie launched an all-out assault on the disease that would claim her husband, music legend Woody Guthrie, and threatened their children. Her extraordinary efforts became a global voice and over 50 years later, HDSA is the premier nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by this cruel disease. We carry on her work to lead us to a world without Huntington's Disease, and create resources for families affected by this horrific disease.

The devastating impact of HD on a family is physical, emotional, financial, and generational. This relentless disease slowly and meticulously deteriorates physical and mental functions of patients, often beginning in their thirties and forties and lasting for decades. Today, there are approximately 41,000 symptomatic Americans, or those that show signs of having HD. 200,000 people in the United States are at-risk of inheriting HD. In less than 10% of cases, juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD) affects children & adolescents.

There is no cure for HD. Our team is on the ground in the community sharing their stories and turning their passion into results. Every dollar we raise is hard at work supporting the resources we provide to the HD community, including our incredible Center of Excellence program, research, social workers, support groups, educational outreach, advocacy, and youth services.
