You hear a door slam / a child in an abusive home hears “hide from dad.”
You see someone run up to you / a child in an abusive home sees “I have to fight to protect myself or mom.”
You feel a tap on your shoulder / a child in an abusive home feels terror at any physical contact.
Where we see daily stimuli or stress, a child who has witnessed or experienced abuse in their homes sees danger all around.
This year, we are shining a light on how the trauma of domestic abuse affects our children daily. Simply put, when a child experiences abuse, directly or indirectly, the trauma will stay with them, often for the rest of their lives. We know that 40% of boys who witness abuse will one day become abusers themselves, and 50% of girls will become involved in abusive relationships when they are older.
The good news? Genesis stands ready 24/7 to provide safety planning, emergency shelter, warm meals, safe housing, Master’s-level therapy, onsite schooling, daycare and more to women and their children.
We want to break this cycle of generational abuse for good and would love your help!
