GALT is in its 22nd year of operation and, during that time, has placed over 3900 greyhounds and greyhound mixes into their forever homes.Â
Our Needs
GALT needs monetary donations to pay for our hounds' medical bills, boarding costs, and other expenses. Additionally, GALT always needs volunteers and foster homes for our hounds. Please visit our website, www.galtx.org, for more information and for to see other ways to help the hounds!
Right now, we need more funds to help our Injured Reserve hounds â those hounds who are not yet ready for adoption due to injuries, diseases and/or parasites. Most of these medical issues take several months to resolve. While many of GALTâs Injured Reserve hounds are currently in foster homes, several are still at our boarding facility while they wait for foster homes to become available, thus increasing our boarding expenses.
In addition to our routine Injured Reserve expenses, we recently incurred $4,000 in surgery expenses for Jenny, who came into GALTâs care on July 30th, 2023, after suffering a career ending break to her right hind leg at Wheeling Downs in West Virginia. Â In the spring, Twyla joined the GALT family as a stray with lots of health issues that depleted our monetary reserves. She was severely underweight and anemic with a significant burden of parasites. While emergency fundraisers helped with Jenny and Twyla's immediate expenses, we will continue to care for them and incur medical expenses for them for quite some time before they are available for adoption.
Additionally, Charlie and Jill are currently receiving treatment for heartworm. Acme, Brock, Canyon, Cliff, Â and Paddy all remain on Injured Reserve receiving treatment for ehrlichia and other tick-borne diseases. Over the coming months and years, we anticipate that hounds in need of expensive medical care will continue to join our family. Â We are committed to helping them too.Â
Rehabilitating these Injured Reserve hounds back to health and preparing them for a forever home is no small task. The bills for veterinary care, medications, and food will add up quickly. You can be a part of their story with a donation for North Texas Giving Day!Â
