Less than six percent of the nation has served in the military. We know that most of our communities are often not exposed to authentic examples of patriotism and may take our freedom for granted. Exposure to the veteran's ideal "service above self" can inspire lasting, positive community change for generations. That's why for more than 25 years, we have been connecting the veteran ideal of service with students, organizations, and communities. Recently, we have introduced additional meaningful opportunities through PARTICIPATION, EDUCATION, and RECOGNITION that not only give back to our veterans but also allow our veterans to give back to you.
The GDVF 2024 theme this year is "Commemorating 50 Years of an All-Volunteer Force."
Since the end of the draft, over 11 million Americans have voluntarily enlisted in active-duty service, embodying a profound sense of patriotism and duty. This shift from conscription to an all-volunteer force highlights the American values of choice and commitment, where individuals willingly take on the challenges of military life to serve their country.
Today, more than 1.5 million men and women proudly wear the uniform, representing every branch of the U.S. armed forces, including the newly established Space Force. They come from diverse backgrounds but are united in their dedication to protecting and defending the United States and its values.
The seamless integration of active-duty members, reservists, and the National Guard under the total force concept ensures that America remains ready to face any challenge. This dedication to service is a cornerstone of national security and a testament to the enduring spirit of Americans who stand ready to serve their country with pride.
The GDVF has proudly supported the Greater Dallas Veterans Day Parade (GDVDP) since 1998. Most of our Foundation Board Members have chaired the GDVDP Committee that organizes, supervises, and conducts the parade each year, on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, marking the date and time of the signing of the Armistice ending World War I.
Here are some of our events:
STUDENT ART CONTEST
VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AND PARADE (NOV 11)
MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM
At GDVF, we create opportunities for communities in the Greater Dallas Area to honor and appreciate veterans and their ideal of "service above self" to inspire positive community change for generations to come.
With your help, we will celebrate our North Texas Veterans on Veteran's Day at Fair Park. Our nation's heroes are deserving, and we hope you will join us!
