Founded in 1975, the Lake Cities Library was initially run by dedicated volunteers and finanacially supported by the four towns of Corinth, Hickory Creek, Lake Dallas and Shady Shores, collectively known as the Lake Cities community. For several decades, this partnership enables the library to serve as a vital resource for residents. In 2014, the original funding agreement dissolved, leading the library to become a dependent of Lake Dallas. In 2015, the library was rebranded as the Lake Dallas Public Library.
In 2022, the library faced significant financial challenges and the city considered closing its doors. Staff was reduced and operating hours were slashed to 17 hours per week. The Friends of the Lake Dallas Library stepped up, rallying concerned citizens to maintain essential programming and donating materials and supplies to keep the library afloat.
With a successful Summer Reading Program in 2024, the Friends group demonstrated that the library was much more than a building full of books, it was the heart and soul of the community that provides crucial services and programs for residents of all ages.
At the end of 2024, the City of Lake Dallas responded to these efforts, restoring a modest budget that included additional staff and increased the hours to 24 hours a week.
In 2025, the Lake Dallas Public Library celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Throughout decades of challenges, the Lake Dallas Public Library has remained a vital cornerstone for the Lake Cities, sustained by the unwavering support of its Friends group, volunteers and the local community.
Due to the passionate Friends group members & volunteers, devoted library and city staff and the unwavering support and donations of patrons, today the Lake Dallas Public Library is financially sound and continues to grow and flourish.
