WHO ARE WE?

The Friends of Coppell Nature Park (FCNP) has been working in city of Coppell for over 25 years, with student-led service learning to help the city to establish the Coppell Nature Park (CNP). Our 3-pronged mission revolves around (1) prairie land restoration/conservation, (2) environmental education, and (3) park maintenance.

(1) Conservation/Restoration:

We are sponsoring ongoing projects to establish 2 pocket prairies in the park, as well as restoring the existing prairie by planting native species and removing invasive species. We conduct bio-blitzes, tree surveys and Christmas bird counts to collect data at the park. We have also mentored student-led conservation efforts such as building American Kestrel nest boxes.

(2) Education:

On the 1st Saturday of each month, our volunteers take visitors on guided hikes. Themes for the hikes include 'Hike with your dog', 'Wildflowers Hike', 'Arbor Day Hike', and so much more.

On the 2nd Saturday, we invite naturalists, paleontologists, birders, entomologists, PHD students to conduct lectures and workshops at the park. These lectures and workshops are open to all age and experience levels.

(3) Maintenance

Along with student volunteers and park staff, we maintain this beautiful 66-acre park by keeping trails clear, restoring signage and replacing old park structures.

Here are the people behind FCNP discussing our legacy on our 20th anniversary:

Mission

FCNP Mission Statement: "to foster partnerships between outdoor enthusiasts and Coppell Nature Park that ensure a better place for nature education while setting high conservation standards and raising a strong sense of community service for future generations."

About Coppell Nature Park:

The park has three ecoregions - prairie, cross-timbers and riparian (along the Cottonwood Creek). These distinct ecoregions allow this small park to have a diverse biome. The park's ecological diversity, its well-maintained trails, and the nature programs at Lou Duggan Biodiversity Education Center combine to offer the community the perfect place to hike, play, explore, and learn.

Needs

Only about 5,000 acres (less than 1%) of the original 12 million to 13 million acres of pristine, true-condition native Texas Blackland Prairie remain today. FCNP is leading prairie restoration projects which require tools and human power for the removal of invasive species (like Privet and Johnson grass) and native plants and seeds for the restorative replanting.

With $500 of donated funds, we can purchase 60 milkweeds for our native pollinators. With $100, we can purchase 1000 sq ft of native seeds. A $50 donation will provide a set of tools & PPE for one volunteer to assist with invasive species removal at a workday.

Equity Statement

The Friends of Coppell Nature Park and Lou Duggan Biodiversity Education Center provide programs, resources, outreach, and volunteer opportunities for the entire North Texas community as well as the schools districts in the area. We actively seek to be inclusive of all groups.
