Friends of Rescue Animals (FRAs) is a 100% volunteer-powered nonprofit helping homeless pets find loving homes faster. Founded in 2004 by four volunteers supporting the Rowlett Animal Shelter, FRAs has grown to more than 450 volunteers supporting five municipal shelters in Rowlett, Garland, Richardson, Sachse, and Wylie along with our foster-based cat rescue program.

Our Mission: Helping homeless pets find loving homes faster by mobilizing volunteers, funding lifesaving programs, and advocating for improved outcomes for shelter animals.

Our Vision: A world where communities, volunteers, and shelters work together to ensure every adoptable pet has a safe, loving home.

We don't operate shelters. We make shelters better. Our volunteers work alongside shelter staff to walk and socialize dogs, care for cats, assist adopters, promote available pets, support adoption events, and foster cats and kittens. Since 2016, our cat rescue program alone has helped more than 3,800 cats find loving homes.

FRAs also funds and operates programs that remove barriers to lifesaving, including emergency medical care, heartworm treatment, dog transport, community cat Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), free microchip clinics, and adoption programs.

With no paid staff, everything we accomplish is made possible by volunteers, donors, grant partners, and community supporters. Together, we're giving shelters more resources, giving volunteers meaningful ways to make a difference, and giving more homeless pets the second chances they deserve.

Mission

Our mission is to help homeless pets find loving homes faster by mobilizing volunteers, funding lifesaving programs, and advocating for improved outcomes for shelter animals.

Needs

Cat Rescue - Requires $90K per year in adoption veterinary expense and $35K per year in sick/injury veterinary expense. IMPACT - enables us to rescue and adopt out approximately 900 cats/kittens per year.

Dog Transport out of Texas - Requires $60K per year to cover the cost of transporting dogs from an over capacity shelter out of state. IMPACT - frees up kennel space and save lives by transporting 400 dogs per year out of state.

Heartworm Treatment - Requires $25K per year to cover the supplies to treat all Heartworm positive dogs at the shelters we support. IMPACT - provides heartworm treatment for 150 dogs per year as soon as they are available for adoption.

Shelter Emergency Medical Support - Budged to provide at least $30K of emergency medical support for animals that come into the shelters we support that need urgent care/surgery. IMPACT - animals get the urgent care needed instead of being euthanized. We fundraise for each specific case as expenses vary widely.

Community Cat TNR - Requires $20K per year to provide sterlizations and vaccinations to 400 unowned, outdoor community cats through the Trap Neuter Return Program. IMPACT - prevents unwanted litters of kittens from being born each year which reduces the strain on shelters during kitten season.
