Friends of Rescue Animals (FRAs) is more than just an animal welfare organization—we’re a movement of compassion in action. Founded in 2004 by four dedicated volunteers with a shared dream of helping animals at the Rowlett Animal Shelter, FRAs has grown into a vibrant team of over 350 volunteers making a difference across North Texas. Today, we proudly support two municipal shelters in Rowlett and Garland, TX, and operate our own foster-based cat rescue program.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers, both shelters maintain live release rates exceeding the 90% benchmark to be considered “no-kill”—a remarkable achievement in Texas. Since 2016, our cat rescue program has placed over 2,300 cats into loving foster homes, giving them a second chance at life.

Our mission: To provide resources, programs, and education that promote the adoption and care of homeless pets in our community.

Our vision: A world where every companion animal has a safe and loving forever home.

FRAs is 100% volunteer-powered, and every animal we help is a testament to the generosity of our donors and grant partners. From funding heartworm treatments and emergency medical care to supporting community cat TNR (trap-neuter-return) efforts and sponsoring lifesaving dog transport programs, we tackle the challenges that help animals live healthier, happier lives.

Our volunteers go beyond traditional rescue work—they spend countless hours socializing, advocating for, and sharing the stories of animals in need, helping them find their forever homes. With FRAs, every pet has a story worth telling.  Whether it’s a heartwarming tale of a foster kitten finding their family or a heroic rescue of a dog on the brink, our work is filled with moments of hope and triumph. FRAs has become a lifeline for countless animals and a trusted partner for shelters, fostering a community where every pet gets the chance they deserve.

Join us in creating a world where animals are treated with love, kindness, and empathy. Your support will make a tangible difference in the lives of countless animals, providing them with a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life.

Together, we can create a world where every tail wags with joy and every purr is a testament to love.

Cat Rescue - Requires $60K per year in adoption veterinary expense and $25K per year in sick/injury veterinary expense. IMPACT - enables us to rescue and adopt out approximately 400 cats/kittens per year.

Dog Transport out of Texas - Requires $48K per year to cover the cost of transporting dogs from an over capacity shelter out of state. IMPACT - frees up kennel space and save lives by transporting 300 dogs per year out of state.

Heartworm Treatment - Requires $24K per year to cover the supplies to treat all Heartworm positive dogs at the shelters we support. IMPACT - provides heartworm treatment for 120 dogs per year as soon as they are available for adoption.

Shelter Emergency Medical Support - Budged to provide at least $21K of emergency medical support for animals that come into the shelters we support that need urgent care/surgery. IMPACT - animals get the urgent care needed instead of being euthanized. We fundraise for each specific case as expenses vary widely..
