SceneShop

A nonprofit organization

Since 1996, SceneShop has produced over 300 new, short works- scenes and monologues- and involved many new writers and performers in the process. Though we're proud that a core group of playwrights and actors consider SceneShop a fixed point on their artistic compass, we also pride ourselves on reaching out to writers and performers who haven't worked with us before. (We have always worked to involve a diverse group of artists contributing to SceneShop.) Our continuing success (survival, even) makes clear that there is room for what we do in the DFW theatrical landscape. We don't consider ourselves a rival or alternative to productions with more spectacle, bigger budgets, and a cast of thousands, but a complement; we aim for our minimalist productions and clear emphasis on the truth of words and acting to speak to ardent and casual theatre fans alike, and provide rich evenings that offer laughs, maybe tears, and food for thought.

Our Needs

SceneShop is a grassroots organization with little overhead. Our needs are modest, our ambitions are not. Besides our regular summer showcase each August, our irreverent "A Fifth of Christmas" each December, and the occasional special project (such as "Renfield: What Comes Next,") SceneShop is always open to new opportunities. In September of 2022, SceneShop is proud to again be a part of the Fort Worth Fringe Festival, produced by Texas Non-Profit Theatres. We hope to do more of our literary readings performances (past shows have focused on Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and James Thurber). In October of 2018, we premiered the original full-length play, "Renfield: What Comes Next," a prequel to Bram Stoker's immortal "Dracula." More than two decades on, we're excited to build on what we've done and see what challenge lies around the corner. In August of 2020- because we could not do our regular show amid the pandemic- we assembled "Here I Am," a two-hour collection of monologues and music, for our YouTube channel. The learning curve was steep, but we're very glad we did it! Our channel is called SceneShop, Fort Worth, TX. In December of 2021, we were ecstatic to return to the stage at Arts Fifth Avenue with another edition of our annual irreverent Christmas show.

Mission

SceneShop is an evolving collective of artists dedicated to the strength and entertainment value of new works, produced simply and performed well.

Needs

More than anything, SceneShop wants an enthusiastic audience. We love for our people to follow our Facebook page and know our next move. Beyond that, we do put out the occasional cal for props, costumes, or incidentals. We should note that many contributions to Arts Fifth Avenue (also a participant in NTGD) benefit us as well.

Equity Statement

Over the years, we have worked to cast a wide net in terms of actors, playwrights and technicians who participate in our productions.
