Friends of Hexter Garden (FOHG) is a 501 c3 non-profit that provides community and financial support for the Hexter Elementary School Garden. All supplies needed to maintain and nurture the garden as well as funding for current TEKS aligned instructional materials and supplies for Hexter students are provided by the Friends of Hexter Garden. We receive no funding through Dallas ISD. Funding for our Garden Educator is generously provided by the Hexter Elementary PTA. We rely on the ongoing support of our donors and volunteers to sustain Hexter Garden and its mission of outdoor education and community building. See our Current North Texas Giving Day campaign needs below and MANY THANKS!!
Friends of Hexter Garden (FOHG) is a group of Hexter teachers, families and neighbors who are dedicated to keeping the Hexter Garden thriving. FOHG aspires to provide students with hands-on experiences that support their academic success, their love of learning, and their personal wellness. FOHG will support school staff, teachers and students by participating in maintenance, fundraising, and community outreach.
Our Purpose:
Support academic success by partnering with teachers to provide an outdoor classroom for academic lessons emphasizing science and math, and incorporating literature, writing, social studies, music, and art.
Provide a rich natural environment that encourages students’ natural curiosity and engages them in the learning process.
Enhance student wellness with physical activity during the school day, stress reduction through their connection with nature, a sense of environmental stewardship, and the experience growing and eating their own nutritious food.
Provide a place and a focus for community involvement, thus strengthening area support for our school.
Funds raised from this year's North Texas Giving Day campaign will go toward supporting our garden program throughout the stages of its current transition. The Hexter Elementary campus is being demolished and rebuilt in 2025-26 including our 13,000 SF school garden. A temporary interim garden classroom will serve our student population. Students will continue to experience the benefits of outdoor hands-on instruction. Funds raised from this year's North Texas Giving Day will be used to assist in the maintenance of this temporary interim garden as well as new equipment for the forthcoming new garden space expected in spring 2026.
Friends of the Hexter Garden believes that, like mycelium on tree roots that support and respond to their fellow trees, when any one person is supported and nourished, the whole community benefits. As such, we embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion of all races, genders, ethnicities, ages, abilities and backgrounds. We believe that each of us brings valuable knowledge and experience to share from which we all learn and benefit.
