HISTORY

EMERGE Coalition, Inc. was founded in 2020 by award-winning composer, Jesus J. Martinez and The Julius Quartet, hailed for leaving audiences "mesmerized by their resonant sound." (The Collegiate Time, VA). Since its inception, EMERGE has leapt head first into cultivating interactive educational initiatives, engaging performance experiences and meaningful community interactions.

EDUCATION - Virtual Workshop & Performance

In the Fall of 2020, our organization hosted the inaugural EMERGE Virtual Workshop & Performance: a 3-day, new music reading laboratory and concert webinar hosting daily reading sessions, masterclasses (such as writing for the string quartet, extended string techniques, etc…) and Q&A’s with industry leading musicians. Concluding each workshop is a virtual performance by The Julius Quartet of the various works as well as a professionally produced recording for each participant. These workshops have welcomed over 50 composers from across the world, resulting in virtually streamed performances across 6 continents. This initiative strives to engage composers across the world seeking to broaden their musical perspectives, expand their knowledge of string writing and bolster their professional portfolio.

EMERGE also dedicates itself to the advancement of the arts through community outreach initiatives and grade-school workshops aimed to cultivate passion for the arts to its future generations. We have partnered and sponsored groups such as the Dallas Academy of Music & Performing Arts, the South Grand Prairie High School percussion studio, visual artists from Sharyland High School, etc.

Equity Statement

At EMERGE, diversity, equity, and inclusion are inseparable from our mission to create powerful arts experiences that connect communities through contemporary, socially engaged programming. We believe the arts flourish when all people—across race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, and immigration status—can contribute, be represented, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

We act on this belief through our programming, operations, and evaluation. Each season, over half of our concert programs feature works by underrepresented, living composers, with a sustained emphasis on ALAANA and broader BIPOC voices. These artists are integrated across the season—not siloed—so that equity is modeled as the norm, not the exception. To reduce barriers, we prioritize accessible pricing (including Pay-What-You-Can), neighborhood partnerships, and welcoming, ADA-compliant venues.

Our approach is evidence-informed. We set clear equity goals; gather anonymous demographic and accessibility data from artists, audiences, and partners; and use qualitative feedback to understand lived experience. We review these findings with staff and board, adjust hiring and vendor practices, and refine program design and community outreach. We share progress annually to promote transparency and accountability.

EMERGE is committed to continuous learning, cultural humility, and co-creation with the communities we serve. By elevating historically marginalized voices and removing structural barriers, we strive to build an arts ecosystem where creativity—and community—can thrive for everyone.
