Compassion in Action: A Dementia Friendly Future

DFDC Community Training Wellness in Nature Program

The seeds of Dementia Friendly Denton County were sown more than 15 years ago through the pioneering work of a group of dedicated volunteers and professionals. They established Stepping Stones, a free, weekly occupational therapy-based support group for individuals with early to mid-stage dementia and their family caregivers. This grassroots effort brought to our community much-needed meaningful activities for persons with dementia, along with practical guidance and support for their caregivers.

As a member of the national Dementia Friendly Community movement, Dementia Friendly Denton County is committed to integrating families living with dementia into our broader community. We provide guidance, resource information, and training to businesses, organizations, caregivers, and individuals diagnosed with dementia. Together, we are dedicated to making Denton County a welcoming and supportive community for those living with dementia and their caregivers.

Mission

Our Mission is Personal

As an all-volunteer organization, our work is driven by lived experience. Every member of our board has been personally touched by dementia through a loved one’s journey or their own diagnosis. We’ve felt the heartache, the uncertainty, and the urgent need for understanding and support.

We know how critical it is to have resources, compassion, and the reassurance that you are not alone. That’s why we rely on the generosity of our community to sustain and grow programs that provide hope, connection, and life-changing support for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

Needs

Your Support Makes This Possible:

• Wellness & Nature Program (formerly Dementia-Friendly Nature Walk): In partnership with 12 nature parks across Denton County, we are expanding opportunities for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to connect with nature in a safe, welcoming environment.

• Dementia-Friendly Business Training: Equipping local businesses with the tools and knowledge to create spaces that are accessible, navigable, and truly welcoming for those living with dementia.

• Support Groups: Offering a safe place for individuals and caregivers to share experiences, find encouragement, and access valuable resources.

• Community Outreach & Resources: Raising awareness, dispelling misconceptions, and connecting families with the support they need while fostering a culture of empathy and inclusion.

With your help, we can expand our reach, touch more lives, and create a truly dementia-inclusive Denton County. Every gift brings us closer to a community where no one faces dementia alone.

Equity Statement

At Dementia Friendly Denton County, we are dedicated to building a community where every person affected by dementia is treated with compassion, dignity, and respect.

We embrace diversity in all its forms and honor the unique experiences, cultures, and challenges of individuals living with dementia, their caregivers, and their families.

Guided by the principles of equity, inclusion, and accessibility, we work to ensure that everyone regardless of background, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, or disability. Everyone should have equal access to resources, support, and opportunities to thrive.

Our commitment is clear: a dementia-friendly community is an inclusive community where all voices are valued, and no one walks the journey alone
