The Decatur Library Foundation supports and enhances the programs and services of the Decatur Public Library.
Each summer, the Foundation funds the library’s Summer Reading events, which provide engaging educational opportunities for children and families. These programs introduce participants to a variety of subjects, including theatre arts, science, and music, helping foster curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.
A central focus of the Foundation’s work is promoting literacy throughout the community. Over the past five years, more than 2,500 books have been distributed to children during the Wise Gives event held each December. In addition, for more than five years, the Foundation has ensured that every child born at the local hospital receives a book, helping encourage reading from the very beginning of life.
In 2022, the Foundation established the Sharon Herzberg Memorial Scholarship to honor a former team member. Over the past four years, one graduating senior has been awarded $2,000 annually to support their educational pursuits and future goals.
The purpose of the Foundation is to enhance the Decatur Public Library by pursuing and accepting gifts, grants, and endowments consistent with its designation under the Internal Revenue Code as a 501©(3) corporation, to benefit library service in the community.
