DALLAS PRETTY N’ PINK INC:
Pretty N’ Pink…Dallas an African American breast cancer awareness organization, was founded in 2004. Gail Winn was inspired to form this organization when her best friend Mary Cary was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2003. Gail saw some of the things her friend was going through and wanted to help but didn’t know exactly what to do. Gail began a journey of seeking ways to find as much information as she could about breast cancer. She wanted to enlighten women about early breast cancer detection and available resources. In 2004 Gail and Mary held their first cancer awareness luncheon at ‘On the Border Restaurant’ in Desoto, Texas. There were approximately 20 women in attendance. They left such a big impression on the manager of ‘On the Border’ that the restaurant now celebrates cancer patients and survivors in the month of October. Today, Mary is breast cancer free. Pretty N’ Pink has evolved to host an annual breast cancer awareness breakfast in October to celebrate breast cancer survivors and patients and to inform women of the progress in breast cancer research. Pretty N’ Pink currently has 5 board members and many dedicated volunteers who promote the mission of compassionately supporting those affected by breast cancer and bringing awareness to the community. There are many ways that women can get involved in our mission. Never doubt your ability to make an impact. Never doubt your power to touch a life, or change a society. We all have the capacity within us. A power that can transform fear into understanding. Ignorance into knowledge, and tragedy…. into hope.
