What do you think happens to a person with disabilities, when their parents are no longer able to care for them?

Joe has Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and lived with his parents as an adult. Joe’s parents have both died. He inherited their home and has family friends who look in on him regularly. Joe’s home needs urgent repairs. A difficult predicament, especially when he can barely maintain basic necessities on his disability income. Thankfully, Joe is not homeless.

People with disabilities are living longer than previous generations; some are outliving their parents’ ability to be their caregivers. As with the general population, advancements in medical care, early intervention, rehabilitation, and technology contribute to better health and the opportunity for a more fulfilled life.

Finding Independence by CPSH exists to guide families and individuals with disabilities along a path to a more secure future, and peace of mind along life’s journey. With more than 12 years of experience in training and supporting the IDD community, we have learned a great deal about the importance of safe, affordable housing for long-term stability.

Finding Independence by CPSH has advocated and educated against the misconceptions that people with IDD cannot live independently or make decisions for themselves. We support families and individuals with training, and solutions for community living, as they learn their rights for self-determination. It is rewarding for everyone when they find confidence in their ability to have an independent life.

Finding Independence guides adults with IDD to become more independent, encourages their families, and promotes their voice in making life decisions. Our success stories burst the misconceptions!

When you give to Finding Independence, you are giving people with disabilities more than an opportunity for a safe, affordable home, you are giving them and their families peace of mind and security, for today and the future.

As a non-profit charity, community donations tell us how valuable our work is to you. A generous donor will match $10,000 in donations, multiplying the impact of your gift!

1. Personalized Guidance: Your donation goes towards mentoring, counseling, and assisting individuals in need. With your support, we can provide guidance to those seeking a place they can truly call home. Most services are provided with no fee.

2. Training Expertise: In-person and virtual workshops help individuals learn self-advocacy, safe home and community living skills, accessing housing resources, and how to chart their course for living more independently with any support services needed.

3. Community Engagement: Help us spread awareness and knowledge by funding our informative presentations. These sessions guide caregivers, service providers, property owners, and government officials in understanding the importance of affordable, safe, and community-based homes.

4. Housing Solutions: With your support, we can expand affordable housing opportunities for our community. We approach this challenge with empathy and a charitable mindset, emphasizing community-based services and supports, promoting independence, dignity, and full community inclusion over institutional care, for all individuals with disabilities.

5. Advocacy and Representation: We're working tirelessly to influence change at the highest levels. Your contribution fuels our advocacy efforts, enabling us to engage with state leaders and policy directors, such as Arc of Texas, Disability Rights Texas, and more, to shape policies that support accessible housing initiatives.
