Help Put Fresh, Healthy Food on the Tables of Local Families

For most of us, a glass of milk and a carton of eggs are everyday essentials. They are part of the meals that fuel our families and support healthy lives.

For many families in Northern Denton County, however, these basic staples have become increasingly difficult to afford.

At the Denton Community Food Center, we believe everyone deserves access to healthy, nutritious food. That's why we purchase fresh milk and eggs every week so local families can enjoy balanced meals and maintain their health and dignity. Unlike shelf-stable pantry items, milk and eggs are rarely available through traditional food bank programs. To keep these essentials available, we spend more than $1125 (up from $880 in 2025) every week purchasing fresh dairy products and eggs for our clients. 

Meet Dawn

Dawn is the mother of three teenage boys and the primary caregiver for her elderly parents. Like many in our community, she works part-time and does everything she can to make ends meet.

Even so, balancing the needs of five family members has become increasingly challenging. Between rising food costs, housing expenses, and caring for her parents, every dollar matters.

Dawn says she doesn't know what her family would do without the support of the Denton Community Food Center.

Thanks to her SNAP benefits and the groceries she receives from DCFC, her family has been able to keep food on the table while continuing to pay their mortgage and meet other essential expenses.

What stands out most to Dawn isn't just the food.

It's the kindness.

"I've always been treated with dignity and respect at DCFC," she says."The people here truly care."

The support she receives allows her to focus on caring for her children and aging parents without the constant fear of an empty refrigerator.

And when her circumstances improve, Dawn hopes to give back.

"When my family gets back on our feet, I want to volunteer and help other families the way DCFC helped mine."
