Created out of a desire to amplify the voices and experiences of Black persons with Down Syndrome and their loved ones, founders Kelli Caughman and Crystal Lotterberry joined together to form the Black Down Syndrome Association (BDSA). The Black Down Syndrome Association was formed as a non-profit organization in the State of Texas and obtained 501© (3) status as of August 2022. By promoting inclusivity, addressing systemic disparities, and supporting individuals in their journey towards a more fulfilling and equitable life, the BDSA has created a culturally competent safe space for Black persons with Down syndrome and their loved ones. The Black Down Syndrome Association is committed to centering the experiences of Black persons with Down syndrome through the programs that we provide.

Mission

The mission of the Black Down Syndrome Association (BDSA) is to connect Black families in the Down syndrome community with resources to improve their lives in a more meaningful way by addressing the many inequalities present that increase barriers to access, support, and education. We strive to fill the gap for the families we serve.

Needs

The BDSA is committed to providing access to resources that improve the lives of Black persons with Down Syndrome and their families. As such, our programming is curated to address some of the most pressing needs of our community. Donations to BDSA will support the following programs and initiatives:

The Black Down Syndrome Association (BDSA) firmly stands against all forms of discrimination. We believe in promoting equality, inclusivity, and respect for every individual, regardless of their race, color, ethnicity, sex, religion, gender identity including gender expression, sexual orientation, age, political beliefs, or disability.

BDSA is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment that fosters the holistic development, well-being, and empowerment of every individual within the Black Down Syndrome community. We are actively working towards dismantling discriminatory practices and promoting equal opportunities in all aspects of life, including education, healthcare, employment, and social inclusion.

Through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and community engagement, BDSA strives to eradicate discrimination and create a society that embraces diversity and celebrates the unique abilities and contributions of all individuals with Down Syndrome.

BDSA encourages everyone to join us in our fight against discriminatory practices, especially toward those with intellectual disabilities.
