Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. For 2009, the American Cancer Society estimated that 21,550 women would be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the U.S. and about 14,600 women would die from the disease. It is an insidious disease that can strike without warning or cause. OCRF was founded in December 1994 by Sol Schreiber to honor the memory of his wife Ann, a distinguished public administrator, and her courageous five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Under the leadership of Liz Tilberis, the beloved late editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, the worlds of fashion, beauty, and entertainment were united around this important cause and OCRF gained national prominence as an organization committed to changing the course of this deadly disease. Today, thanks to the ongoing commitment of these industries and the support of countless individuals, OCRF is one of the leading independent agencies dedicated to advancing ovarian cancer research in the United States.
