Jim and Bettye Baker have had a life long passion for helping animals in need. As part of that passion, they formed Oak Hill Animal Rescue 20 years ago to help save even more dogs and cats and bring public awareness to the overwhelming and constant need. During that time, OHAR has saved over approximately 3,000 animals, primarily those facing euthanasia at overcrowded local shelters. Many come to us with various medical needs including awful heartworms that are so prevalent in the south. No matter what the issue, OHAR supports and cares for them until they find their forever homes.
But that's not all we do...
OHAR is part of a network of organizations that saves dogs from South Texas where there are fewer rescues and resources to help. We assist in transporting these dogs to DFW Airport where they are boarded on planes destined for other areas of the country and much better chances for adoption.
Our wheelchair therapy dogs spent many years participating in Baylor Rehabilitation Institute's Pet Assisted Therapy Program. They visit patients and provide emotional support during the individuals therapy and recovery process. You can often see these dogs at our adoption events and nearby retail establishments teaching people about mobility solutions for pets.
We provided dogs to P.R.E.P. (Patience, Responsibility, Empathy, Partnership), a program run by a local non-profit organization called Youth With Faces. The dogs attend courses with young men within the Dallas County Juvenile Authority for At Risk Youth. The teens teach the dogs basic obedience skills while learning skills they can use to find employment after leaving detention.
So rescue is not what we DO....it's who we ARE:-)
