The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving celebrates its 36th season in 2023-24. This year we're excited that the orchestra can again carry out our scheduled series of Sunday afternoon classical concerts at the Irving Arts Center - "Sundays at the Symphony" - from October through May, each to be recorded and made available with links on our website - www.npoirving.com - to our YouTube page.
Performing on Sunday afternoons at the Irving Arts Center, we're often the first place families - and students - discover classical music. For many, through our "First Tickets" program, funded in part by a gift from a CFT donor-directed fund, it may be literally their first experience of going into a concert hall, with their family (on a free family pass) and discovering the magic of classical music. And we keep ticket prices affordable, to appeal to families and students.
We pioneered in this area in presenting music of the Americas, in our 15-year-old "Latino Connections!" series. Our conductor and music director, Dr. Sergio Espinosa, is an international authority on the music of Mexican composers. This season we'll continue to present music with a wider geographic scope, as our community continues to be called one of the most diverse in the nation.
We're also a growing resource for Irving schools, public and private. Since our founding in 1988, we've made it a priority to work with students. Today, we do that each season through side-by-side concerts, where students share a stand with players, and a concerto competition for high school musicians, and "First Tickets" to introduce middle school orchestra students (and their families) to a symphony orchestra.
Our Needs
We're glad that this year we're able to celebrate our 36th anniversary with a full season of "Sundays at the Symphony" at the Irving Arts Center. And we are fortunate to have a growing endowment. But we do know that Giving Day funds will be more important to us than ever this season.
Funds will be needed for normal orchestra costs - music licensing, soloists and guest artists, facilities for concert-half concerts and rehearsals and personnel. Our ticket income, never the largest segment of our annual budget income, is still returning to pre-COVID levels for in-person concert attendance in our 700-seat concert hall.
Additional funds from Giving Day will also help us continue our online offerings, begun during the pandemic - helping cover costs of professionally recording each performance during the season to offer online to music lovers, schools and the public. And as always, Giving Day funds will make it possible for us to continue and expand our "Sundays at the Symphony" concerts from October through May in this exciting 36th season.
