Miles of Freedom

Miles of Freedom was established after the full exoneration of Richard Miles in 2012. Mr. Miles was convicted of murder and attempted murder, sentenced to 60 years in the Texas prison system. Mr. Miles would spend a total of 15 years in prison and 2 1/2 years free awaiting for the Court of Criminal Appeals ruling of actual innocence. The mission and work of Miles of Freedom is one borne out of empathy for individuals, families and communities impacted by incarceration.

This year, we are excited to introduce the Aubrey Jones Legacy Fund, named in honor of the memory of our Co-Founder, Mr. Aubrey Jones. The Aubrey Jones Legacy Fund is a designated fund to directly address the problems of individuals that are unable to secure essentials or are in crisis. 

Millions of Americans are one paycheck away from financial hardship. With increases in prices, many households find themselves struggling to even purchase essentials. Research indicates that this strain on family budgets is even more prevalent among those already living in poverty. Miles of Freedom works hard to provide services and empower clients to help them live a quality life regardless of being plagued with hardships. But what happens when the basic items that many take for granted are unattainable?

Mike came into Miles of Freedom ecstatic about his new warehouse job making $17.00 an hour. He explained that this job would make a tremendous difference for his family. Unfortunately, he could not afford to purchase the steel-toed boots and black pants that were a part of the required uniform. He was faced with searching for another job, possibly for less pay, that did not have these requirements. Pat’s son is incarcerated, and she is caring for her three grandchildren. With her fixed income and limited resources, she is unable to afford the required school uniforms. Mark, recently released from prison, was unable to pay for his birth certificate and ID so that he could begin his employment search. These are all situations that have been recently encountered by case managers at Miles of Freedom. Stories like these are all too common in our work. 

Miles of Freedom recognizes the need to give these individuals and many others a hand up. One hundred percent of the money allocated to this fund is used as direct investment in clients to help address an immediate need or mitigate a serious situation. Your generous contributions to this fund will allow Miles of Freedom to purchase school uniforms and school supplies for families, buy work boots and uniforms for individuals entering the workforce, purchase government documents, and so much more!
