The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Metrocare (Cohen Clinic at Metrocare), is PASSIONATE about ensuring our service member families thrive. Through a partnership between Metrocare and Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), the Cohen Clinic at Metrocare improves the quality of life for service men and women. Metrocare’s Cohen Clinic supports active-duty service members and post-9/11 veterans, including those from the National Guard and Reserves, and their families. The clinics in CVN – including Metrocare’s Cohen Clinic – work to strengthen mental health outcomes and complement existing support, with a particular focus on post-traumatic stress and transition-related concerns. The Cohen Clinic has provided evidence-based care to over 4,800 active-duty service members, veterans and their families in our first seven years, with our number served growing each year. In addition to traditional mental health care, the Cohen Clinic provides social activities and mental health education for our community members, including hosting a Gala to support the children impacted by their parents’ service.

Among our core values, the Cohen Clinic at Metrocare is committed to reducing barriers to care. As groups, both women and persons of color have histories of bias and discrimination in the armed forces that may impact their comfort seeking care through traditional avenues, such as the DoD and VA, and may increase their need for mental health care. The Cohen Clinic at Metrocare is proud to report female veterans make up 25% of our veteran clients, and women make up 43% of our clients overall, creating a greater gender balance and more welcoming environment. In our most recent year, our client population identified in the following racial/ethnic categories: 46% white, 25% Black or African American, 17% Hispanic/Latino, 4% Asian, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, 7% other or unknown, and < 1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.

About Metrocare: For more than 55 years, Metrocare has been on the front lines in the fight to bring accessible, high-quality mental health care to our most vulnerable neighbors. As the largest provider of mental health and intellectual developmental disability services in Dallas County, Metrocare serves over 55,000 adults and children annually.  Amidst a world-wide pandemic, historic unemployment rates, and systematic injustice, mental health has risen to the forefront of our national consciousness. At Metrocare our passion is to provide a broad array of services to people with mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. While COVID will eventually become a chapter in history books, it has given our country and communities a stern wake up call to the realities many face daily - the all too often UNSEEN struggle of mental illness! Thankfully, mental illness has been on the mind of Metrocare for the last 55 years and will continue to be given the increased DEMAND for mental health services.

Giving Activity

Mission

The mission of Metrocare is, "to serve our neighbors with developmental or mental health challenges by helping them find lives that are meaningful and satisfying."

The Cohen Clinic at Metrocare seeks to complement care provided by the Veterans Administration (VA) and support the mental health of post-9/11 veterans, active-duty service members, and their families.

Needs

Now, more than ever, our community needs accessible, trauma-informed mental health care. Today, help SERVE THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED as we proudly dedicate this year's North TX Giving Day efforts to the veteran community. Now more than ever, veterans, active-duty service members, and military families are struggling to transition back into the community, many suffering from PTSD and other mental health challenges. The Cohen Clinic at Metrocare is here to help! With your support, the veteran community will have access to services, many of whom benefit from innovative Cognitive Processing Therapy, but may also need support from peers and family members who extend the therapeutic embrace of the clinic.

For example, as one client has said: “To me everything, being able to have someone to talk while going through some stuff that most civilians could never understand or relate to. Providing that support means the world to me and helps me be a better person. I feel that I'm not alone and my feelings matter.”

Meeting people where they are requires creative problem-solving and compassionate tenacity. Understanding veterans and their unique experience requires a special approach. Doing both, is what the Cohen Clinic at Metrocare is why it is a remarkable place. With philanthropic support from our community and individuals like YOU, together we can ensure veterans and military families experiencing mental health challenges have access to care at the Cohen Clinic at Metrocare!

There's no better way to give with PASSION and PURPOSE than to support a veteran in need of affordable, accessible care. TODAY, Serve those who have Served!
