Telling our Stories
Jolt Initiative brings artists and musicians together to lift up issues and voices in the Latino community, and share stories of how everyday people in the community are coming together to build a stronger democracy.
Viri Sanchez graduated from the inaugural Leadership Institute course and helped lead Jolt Initiative's most notable protest to date, Quinceanera at the Capitol. Using the power of art, brown pride and girl power to protest SB4, 15 teen members performed choreographed dances to traditional Mexican music and Hamilton's immigrants hip-hop song we got the job done- the event went viral reaching an estimated 50 million Americans. Viri is a 16 year old DACA recipient who joined Jolt Initiative because she was tired of seeing her community attacked by legislators. In Leadership Institute, Viri learned to recruit and organize classmates and how to tell her story to the media - she's featured in Teen Vogue and MTV. She learned her voice and story matter and is starting a chapter at her high school. Expanding the Leadership Institute helps more young Latinas like Viri amplify their voice to fight for their community.
A generous Jolt Initiative has dedicated to give $1,000 in matching funds for donors that contribute during North Texas Giving Day.
