Guide Dogs of Texas

A nonprofit organization

Guide Dogs of Texas has provided over 240,000 days of guided sight to many of the over 600,000 Texans disabled by vision loss.

This year's theme is to "Empower The Puppy!"

Empower The Puppy means to give each and every pup the confidence they need to be a successful Guide Dog. Providing confidence starts when they are in the nursery with their mom. After the nursery, the puppies go to their new home with their Puppy Raiser. This is where they learn basic skills, like sit and stay, and are exposed to different environments including stores, restaurants, and regular outings. Third, comes Advanced Training. Here is when the dog works with a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor to learn the skills they need to help their future Teammate. This is where they learn how to find bathrooms, doors, sidewalks, and other skills they need. Finally, the pup moves onto working with their Team. With their teammate, they put all of the skills they have learned over the last 2 years are put to use.

We have chosen a variety of donation levels that show what your gift will provide. Your donation will provide the cost it takes to provide the needed supplies to our volunteers. Whether it is the cost of grooming supplies or the cost of supporting a team, we are so grateful for your support. Your donation will help our staff and volunteers Empower the Puppy to be successful Guide Dogs to Texans who are blind. Without wonderful donors like you, we would not be able to change lives.

Mission

Guide Dogs of Texas provides visually impaired Texans with quality guide dogs to increase their freedom, mobility and independence. We are committed to personalized service and lifelong dedication to our clients disabled by blindness and their guide dogs.

Needs

It costs $17 to provide one day of canine-powered guided sight that gives freedom, mobility and independence to a Texan living with blindness. That adds up to more than $50,000 for the entire working years of a guide dog team.

In addition to financial support, GDTX is always seeking volunteers! We rely on a team of trained puppy raisers, sitters and boarders to help prepare our future guide dogs for their work as the eyes of a Texan with blindness!

Equity Statement

There are over 600,000 people in Texas who are visually impaired, and this number is larger every year. We estimate there are over 3,600 Texans who are blind/severely visually impaired and whose lives would be transformed through guide dog mobility. Applications for guided sight continue to double on an annual basis. Guide Dogs can help people move from isolation to inclusion, constraints to freedom, and from darkness into the light of canine vision and companionship. Guided sight assists in providing equity to those disabled by vision loss.
