Imagine a school that empowers young men to become future leaders, instilling in them the values of integrity, resilience, and compassion. That's the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA). BOMLA is dedicated to shaping the next generation of male leaders who will make a positive impact on their communities and the world.

Barack Obama Academy is a Dallas ISD magnet school located in the A. Maceo Smith building in the heart of Oak Cliff, named after civil rights leader Antonio Maceo Smith. The student population primarily consists of young men of color in grades 6-12, many of whom are first-generation college students.

No matter where our students’ dreams may take them—as near as the North Texas region or as far as the southern coast of Spain—FRIENDS is the independent nonprofit organization that supports our young men every step of the way.  "FRIENDS, how many of us have them?" The young men of BOMLA are the heart and soul of our mission. From the moment they enter BOMLA through the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, summer bridge program and long after they graduate, our students inspire us with their monumental dreams and commitment to follow through on their loftiest aspirations.

FRIENDS is the foundation that bridges the opportunity gap for the young men at BOMLA. Our funding priorities include student enrichment (cultural immersions, college tours, leadership development camps), professional enrichment (conferences/training for faculty), and program enrichment (calculators, Netbooks, iPads, etc.). We believe in serving the whole child and all those associated with that child to help create an ecosystem of dedicated individuals whose mission is to empower each student.

Earlier this summer, we supported five students in traveling to Tokyo, Ghana, and Morocco. Additionally, we funded one student to participate in the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, where they were able to observe and ask questions in real time during a live surgical procedure. Another one of our students traveled to the University of Texas National Institute of Forensics Camp for debate competitions. We look forward to providing more opportunities for our brothers with your support.

This North Texas Giving Day, we would like to invite you to join our community of supporters to invest in and empower the young men we serve through the FRIENDS of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy.
