Dickinson Place

A nonprofit organization

Dickinson Place Charitable Corporation was organized May 7, 1971 as an outreach of Highland Park United Methodist Church. On November 20, 1976 it was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation operating as a residence for low-income elderly. In it's 48 year history, Dickinson Place has served over 2,700 lower income seniors through housing and social services.

Originally constructed in 1955, the facility is a high-rise and consists of 165 one bedroom apartments. 116 apartments are reserved for seniors with very low income who qualify for rent subsidy under the Section 8 program from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The remaining 49 units are subsidized by Dickinson Place and are reserved for low income seniors.

Dickinson collaborates with numerous social service agencies throughout the DFW metroplex. Many of our residents come to us after being found living on the street, in their car, or in unsafe temporary living situations. In addition, many of them have been exploited by friends and family and struggle to find a way to a better life. Dickinson Place staff works closely with several outreach agencies such as the City of Dallas, Catholic Charities, Adult Protective Services, the Senior Source, Austin Street Shelter, and the Salvation Army to help elderly individuals that have been exploited, are being evicted or just need a safe and secure place to live.

Upon moving in, our social work staff assesses each resident individually to determine what resources and referrals are needed. Such referrals can range from utilizing the North Texas Furniture Bank, the money management program from the Senior Source or the People and Nutrition Program (PAN) from the North Texas Food Bank.
