Brain Injury Network's Clubhouses are community-based programs for adults living with the effects of an acquired brain injury, referred to as members. Our brain injury clubhouses include BIND in Plano and BINDFW in Fort Worth, Texas.
Our programs focus on fueling HOPE, restoring PURPOSE, and CONNECTING brain injury survivors back to the community. The Clubhouse model emphasizes the value of meaningful work in regaining a sense of purpose. Our members, staff, and volunteers work together to run all aspects of the clubhouse program, including answering phones, giving visitor tours, developing internal and external communications, implementing outreach plans, preparing meals, and cleaning the clubhouse. As a result, members gain return skills for returning to work or productive community volunteering, strengthen appropriate behaviors through the work-ordered day, and develop the life skills necessary to reconnect to the community and live more independently.
BIND was founded in 2011, and over the last decade, we have experienced tremendous support, interest, and growth thanks to community support. Last year, we opened our long-awaited Fort Worth Clubhouse to double the program's impact and expand services and support across DFW. This year, the Fort Worth program will have a new home in our own clubhouse space that is ability-friendly and large enough to accommodate program growth. Brain Injury Network is the only nonprofit organization in Texas providing brain injury clubhouse programs.
Imagine being suddenly unable to read, walk, or remember how to use your phone or coffee maker? Imagine being unable to speak, to ask someone for help, or tell a family member "I love you." What if you and your family were unprepared for the loss of income and loss of independence caused by a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or brain cancer? For 100% of Brain Injury Network clubhouse program members, brain injury came without warning.
This is the reality for more than 500,000 Texans who live with a disability caused by a brain injury and this number grows by 10,000 each year. Texas is home to outstanding medical and rehabilitation providers, but uninsured survivors don't receive adequate care, and at least 40% of survivors have at least one unmet need for services a year after their injury - long after their coverage for rehabilitation has ended. This includes improving memory and problem-solving, managing stress and emotional upsets, and improving work and life skills.
The Brain Injury Network's mission is to provide tools and a bridge of support to adult brain injury survivors so they can reconnect to life, the community, and the workplace or community volunteering - based on the individual's goals. Our vision is to lead the DFW area in the provision of brain injury member-driven services and serve as the model for brain injury clubhouses across the state.
Our significant needs lie in the continued support of our programs, operations, and expansion of programs, including support for our newly expanding Fort Woth Clubhouse and services. Ongoing in-kind support needs include support for member lunches through donations and gift cards for groceries, program supplies, including printer paper and toner, and supplies for clubhouse and community special projects.
Community events include our Golf Tournament and auction in the fall and the North Texas Brain Injury Awareness Walk - Synapse Laps on April 13, 2024. Sponsorships, volunteers, participants, and in-kind donations are needed and welcome for all events.
