Bold Idea is tackling the digital skills opportunity gap for Dallas ISD students. Our after-school Coding Clubs combine hands-on STEM learning and mentoring from industry professionals. We partner with local corporations and Dallas ISD elementary and middle schools in underserved neighborhoods. Together, we are creating a pathway to careers requiring technology skills for Dallas students - especially those marginalized by race and income. Through 28 learning sessions, for a total of 56 hours during the school year, students work with mentors on hands-on coding projects that prioritize development in computer science and digital literacy skills, as well as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
This North Texas Giving Day, Bold Idea is raising $33,000 for our Coding Clubs program, impacting 225 students at 11 Dallas ISD schools in the 2022-2023 school year. In a technology-focused world, few academic subjects offer more potential for impact and innovation than computer science. But in Dallas ISD, like school districts across the country, girls and Black and Latinx students are all underrepresented in computer science education. Few schools have the budget for curriculum, qualified teachers, and other resources to teach the subject, especially for the youngest learners in elementary and middle school, and it is setting these students behind.
This digital skills gap is a problem because learning CS is critical for college and career success. Computing jobs are the top source of new wages in the U.S., and a computer science major can earn 40% more than the college average. It is especially glaring in Dallas, an area that hosts one-third of all high-tech jobs in Texas and the 6th largest concentration of high-tech jobs in the U.S. A recent report by CompTIA projects that the Dallas tech workforce will grow by 17% over the next ten years.
Bold Idea helps students discover computer science through hands-on learning and mentoring with industry professionals, building critical thinking skills and equipping students to succeed in the careers of the future.
