Our charity is all about providing an essential need- socks. Most people who donate to the homeless will donate food, jackets, clothes, but rarely do they provide socks and under clothing. After much research, we discovered not only do socks provide warmth, socks protect their feet from getting cuts and sores. People get diseases through their feet because a cut in the foot allows disease to travel into the bloodstream. We also partner with other non-profits who provide clothing and food to people in need. The charities have come to us because socks are not an easy piece of clothing. Yet, socks are so critical. They are critical to school children who want to fit in with their classmates and not have anyone know they are homeless. Socks are important to the homeless. One man stated "when I lived under the bridge, when I received a new pair of socks, I felt part of the human race." We want to provide hope to the sometimes hopeless. If giving a person a pair of clean socks and a bag of food gives them hope as well as provides a means to stay healthy, then we have achieved our goal.
This year we teamed up in the community with St Vincent DePaul, North Texas food Bank, Project Gabriel (partners with pregnancy resource centers, adoption agencies, and family assistance); Knights of Malta (they provide weekly meals and sock donations to the homeless) and St. Katharine Drexel Community Closet (a small clothes closet working in the Vickery Meadow area of Dallas working in partnership with Vickery Meadow Food Pantry).
Our Needs
We are a tiny, family based charity who has found a calling to provide for the less fortunate. We are looking to raise $5000 in order to provide as many backpacks of socks and under clothing for the homeless. This year, we were provided 3500 pairs of socks by Bombas. This donation of socks had a huge impact on allowing the charity to provide more bags this year than in our previous 10 years. The funds are used to purchase t-shirts, underwear, some hygiene products in addition to duffle bags and back packs.
