The Allen Garden Club (AGC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1998 with the intention of helping educate people in Allen and the surrounding areas about gardening. We offer monthly programs on plants, trees, landscape design, perennials, houseplants, organic gardening, and much more. We also give back to our community by performing community service projects such as planting trees and gardens to beautify the city. All are welcome to our monthly meetings.
Our Needs
The Allen Garden Club sponsors a scholarship for an Allen High School college bound senior who plans on majoring in a horticulture related field. Our goal for our scholarship is $1,000. Anything over that will go towards our community service projects and monthly presentations.
Our long-term goal is to install an educational garden at a public park to be used by classes and groups to learn about:
- the many native and adapted plants for our area,
- the common and botanical names of the plants,
- the various birds and pollinators that will visit the garden,
- and many other aspects related to plants and nature.
We are calling this new garden, Carol's Garden in memory of our long time member, Carol Hubmer. Carol enjoyed learning about plants that would grow in our area and other aspects of gardening and would read many gardening books and research gardening topics on the internet. Her beautiful garden was featured on two of our garden tours.
We are going to use the Junior Master Gardener program as part of the curriculum for Carol's Garden for helping educate school groups. We would like to raise $4,000 to use towards the installation of this children's garden. Our biggest expense will be the irrigation which at this time we estimate being around $2,000. We have trees, plants, compost, mulch, stone, edging, signage, lumber, trellises, and more to purchase for this garden.Â
We partner with other organizations such as the Allen High School JROTC program, Collin County Master Gardeners, Keep Allen Beautiful, Scout groups, and Allen High School horticulture students to get their help to install the various phases of this garden and other garden projects and to help with maintenance of the garden(s) in the future.
We support garden related community landscaping projects such landscaping around the historic buildings at the Allen Heritage Village and other public gardens throughout the City of Allen. Our members volunteer to help with garden installations and maintenance of these gardens.
