“Happy Third Grader!”
Jack was a second grader at Amos Elementary. When it was his turn to be screened by the dentist he was very timid, shy and scared and would barely open his mouth. After the dds was able to put him at ease she discovered why he was so fearful. Jack had a mouth full of decay and several abscesses. He was definitely in pain. We classified him as a 1 meaning he needed immediate dental treatment. We consulted with the nurse who immediately called his parents to let them know what the dds had discovered.
The following year when the SMILES team returned to Amos Elementary and screened the third graders lo and behold there was Jack with a bright shiny smile and not scared at all. He was now classified as a 3 meaning he had a healthy mouth and all his dental pain was resolved!
