Friends of The Colony Animal Services (aka Paws)

A nonprofit organization

We look to share information on how to responsibly own a pet so that an owned pet stays home. We raise money through community fundraisers and through the Chamber of Commerce. We are proud to say we have a 97% live release rate (97 out of every 100 pets who come into the shelter either go home, or are adopted, or go to rescue). Our shelter director, Mark Cooper, communicates with citizens and leaders within The Colony daily in our ongoing effort to ensure pets in The Colony are owned well, and forever.

Our Needs

Frankly, money. The funds raised will go to vet costs incurred when we spay or neuter a pet, or if there is supportive medical care (like Dakota who has various medical conditions requiring monthly treatment), or for those animals caught in a trauma (neglect will cause long term damage if not remedied as soon as it is encountered and in younger pets manifests as upper respiratory, mange or heartworm). The shelter has a $25,000 city funded budget, which is exhausted some months into the year. So, the volunteers step in to assist with fundraising.

Mission

The board of directors and volunteers support The Colony Animal Services in three ways: we assist with adoptions of those pets in the care of The Colony Animal Services, we support our community through donations to the community and support for animal medical needs and we raise money to fund the medical fund set up so that we can pay for needed medical services for the over 1,000 animals who go through The Colony Animal Services.

Needs

The Colony allocates funds for the medical fund used to treat about 1,100 pets a year, but that money is spent by 5-6 months into the year. Please donate funds to give us the opportunity to cure heartworm (a disease of neglect), or spay and neuter (to prevent the next generation of unwanted puppies or kittens), or to provide medical care specific to the animal (like Cobe who came to us with a WHOLE corn cob in his digestive systems and we had to have it surgically removed).
