Annually we rescue 450-550 dogs from high-kill shelters or from an abusive life on the streets or in high-kill shelters. They are checked by a veterinarian and receive any needed medical care. American Airlines gives us a special rate to fly these dogs to our partner shelters in the New York and New Jersey, and Maine. Volunteers from the shelters meet the animals at the airport and transport them to their shelters where they stay overnight. If necessary, they are checked again by a veterinarian and are spayed/neutered if that has not already been done. Then families on the waiting list are notified to come to the shelter to adopt their new family member. 99.9% of the animals we rescue are adopted. SFCA receives a video or photo album of each dog with its new family at adoption. These videos bring joy to SFCA's volunteers who have lovingly prepared these animals for transport.
Daisy is a dog that was dumped like a piece of trash on a desolate road in Dallas. Fortunately, Tawana Couch, founder of SFCA and her friend Carolyn Merritt decided to check the dry riverbed that runs along the road, and there was Daisy, now a mother of four puppies. Rescuing them took on extra urgency because a huge storm was forecast to hit that area, causing that dry riverbed to become a raging river. Tawana crossed the half-full creek and was able to slip a leash on Daisy and guide her to safety. Next, she went back for Daisy's puppies. Five lives saved! For two months the little family was nurtured in a safe and loving foster home. Then they traveled to New Jersey where they were adopted into their new "furever" homes.
Our Needs
Our most critical need is for funds to purchase reduced-fare airline tickets on American Airlines. Airline tickets range from $145-285 ea. depending on the size of the animal. We are one of American Airlines top 10 customers nationwide shipping live animals. Annual veterinarian costs range $10,000-$15,000 depending on the condition of the animals rescued. Overnight annual boarding expenses for animals waiting to be transported run $9,000-$12,000. All funds raised go directly to the care and transport of animals. SFCA has no paid staff or management overhead. All work is done by dedicated volunteers, many with more than twenty years of experience.
