Whose Voices Reach the Stage?

Whose stories become part of our shared culture? It depends on who gets produced.

In 1998, three Dallas theatre artists tried to interest local companies in an award-winning play about the exclusion of women artists. They were repeatedly told it was not “their kind of play.”

They decided it was exactly their kind of play—and Echo Theatre was born.

As we launch our 29th season, we continue to produce, promote, and preserve plays by women and nonbinary writers. We give North Texas audiences the chance to encounter perspectives they may not find anywhere else—and create paid opportunities for the actors, directors, designers, technicians, and other artists who bring those stories to life.

Nearly 60% of Echo’s budget directly supports the people who make the work: local actors, directors, designers, technicians, producers, and other theatre professionals.

The World of Eva Luna

Echo’s 29th season enters the richly imagined world of internationally celebrated author Isabel Allende through two connected theatrical works. In November, Echo and Teatro Dallas will join forces for the regional premiere of Eva Luna, adapted from Allende’s novel by award-winning playwright Caridad Svich. Echo will also present the world premiere of The Stories of Eva Luna, Stephanie Oustalet’s adaptation of Allende’s haunting short stories. 

Free Programs

Since 2001, Echo Reads has introduced Dallas audiences to the work of more than 150 playwrights through free professional staged readings and lively post-performance conversations. The series gives artists room to explore compelling scripts and gives audiences a meaningful voice in the conversation.

Echo also creates connections through artistic partnerships, community events, its free-ticket program, and ECHO OFFSTAGE, our podcast featuring intimate conversations with influential women in theatre.
