LeadHer Outreach Opportunities Program

Founded 5 years ago by senior student Warisha Khan, LOOP has spent the last half-decade providing a safe, welcoming space for students interested in supporting young women in their STEAM goals. The club offers students the opportunity to explore the intersection of classical STEM and art/design and to cultivate a supportive environment for all young women interested in STEAM and STEAM-adjacent career paths.  

The club meets several times a month. About half of our after-school meetings involve spending time applying our understanding of STEM to art, like when we blowtorch pumpkins for Halloween or learn about viscosity, polarity, and surface tension with our annual paint pour. The other half of our meetings brings in professionals to work with students, discussing careers, answering questions about their journeys, and helping students expand their horizons about what is available after graduation. 

Since the focus is on developing leaders in STEM, club members also create outreach events for junior highs and underclassmen and work with Design, Connect, Create as volunteers. Throughout the year, we also take students on field trips to various STEAM opportunities in the Metroplex and to learn about women’s organizations they can join to support them professionally. The club has an engaged membership of around 50 students each year and active alumni who often return to mentor and support students coming through Berkner High School behind them.
