The North Texas Clean Energy Group ("NTxCEG," Formerly Known As the North Texas Renewable Energy Group or "NTREG") is the North Texas Chapter of the Texas Solar Energy Society ("TXSES"). NTxCEG/NTREG is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax exempt organization.
NTxCEG was established in 2001 with the primary goal of educating North Texans about the benefits of Residential Solar Photo Voltaic energy generation and advocating for its deployment. NTxCEG is an all-volunteer organization. It encourages (but does not require) its members to become active members of TXSES and the American Solar Energy Society ("ASES"). NTxCEG meets the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. The meetings are virtual. See our FaceBook page or website for specific information before each meeting.
The group's areas of interest have grown leading to its name change. The areas of interest include:
NTxCEG serves the North Texas area comprised of 10 counties, notably Dallas and Tarrant Counties, but also Denton, Wise, Collin, Parker, Hood, Johnson, Ellis and Kaufman counties.
NTxCEG sponsored and produced the DFW Solar Tour ("the Tour") for 14 consecutive events from 2009 to 2022. It had become the 3rd largest in the nation and the largest in the State of Texas. The Tour was open to the public at no charge. It showcased residences and businesses with photovoltaic solar energy systems.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 the Tour went virtual. NTREG added a YouTube Channel to highlight residential and business host sites. Videos discussing the sites were uploaded to the YouTube Channel and are still available. In 2021 the Tour was again virtual due to rising COVID-19 infections. In 2022 it returned to an in-person format.
Due to declining attendance, the Solar Tour has been postponed until new storage and vehicle technologies mature (such as V2X) for home and grid integration in hopes of drawing a larger audience.
In 2021 and 2022, NTxCEG worked with TXSES to find interns to work locally for a semester in the solar industry. Hiring women and people of color was a goal of these internships.
NTxCEG has also supported the Solar Car Challenge. NTxCEG donated funds as well as the time and talents of its members as advisors to local area solar car teams, as chaperones and as judges.
The North Texas Clean Energy Group, Inc. ("NTxCEG") is dedicated to furthering the development of renewable energy sciences and technologies with concern for the ecological, social and economic fabric of our community and state. NTxCEG is dedicated to the education of citizens on the value of solar and other renewable energy sources for their homes, businesses, and communities. NTxCEG promotes renewable energy through the exchange of ideas and information at meetings, discussion groups and public and private events.
NTxCEG has four (4) activities which it is seeking to support in 2026.
First, NTxCEG wants to fund its monthly operations. NTxCEG is holding monthly virtual meetings on clean energy related topics. This allows NTxCEG to reach a wider audience and access a wider speaker base.
Second, NTxCEG wants to build and maintain a new website and a series of "micro websites" with information on multiple clean energy related topics for public use. The first such micro website is at https://truthaboutcleanenergy.org/ and titled "The Truth About Residential Solar Energy Systems".
Third, NTxCEG has conducted "build events" to bring both science, energy efficiency and the renewable energy revolution to diverse populations. NTxCEG used funds it raised for the purchase of raw materials for Solar Lunchboxes (a small solar powered charger with energy storage). NTxCEG has held multiple Solar Lunchbox Workshops. Dallas College produced a video detailing how to build a Solar Lunchbox. NTxCEG hopes to use the video to support workshops in the DFW Metroplex to teach young people (ages 11-16) how to build their own Solar Lunchbox. The video is available to the general public through the NTxCEG/NTREG YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI3kWObv1D8&t=8s). Not only does a project like this enhance interest in science and give young people something tangible to take home, the Solar Lunchbox is extremely handy when the grid goes down or when the owner is away from grid power. Those with Solar Lunchboxes are able to charge their cell phones and power small electronics without a grid connection.
Fourth, NTxCEG wants to distribute LED light bulbs and other small, efficient electric devices to households in neighborhoods where they are not common, to reduce electricity bills. The products will either be purchased with NTxCEG funds or donated by outside groups.
