Support the Sunbeams

In the North Texas community, we face pressing challenges that hinder the holistic development of our youth, leading to academic struggles, below-grade-level literacy, limited coping skills, and a lack of exposure to critical STEM education. Moreover, we recognize the vital importance of faith-building and its role in building resilience and hope among young individuals. As such, we are committed to continuing the New Horizons of North Texas after-school program to address these pressing needs and empower the next generation of well-rounded, compassionate, and confident leaders.

Our program consists of seven core areas of focus: 

1. Faith-Based Values: Our goal is to introduce each student to faith, hope and love. We recognize the significance of faith in shaping who an individual is and becomes as they grow. While respecting the diversity of beliefs in our community, we offer hope-based discussions, the sharing of love, and a safe space to ask questions. 
2. Academic Skill Building: Our goal is to enhance the academic performance of our students. Through personalized tutoring, homework assistance, and engaging educational activities, we seek to bridge learning gaps, boost confidence, and instill a love for learning.
3. Literacy Skill Building: Our goal is to recognize each participant’s reading level, and encourage the growth and development of literacy skills. We seek to encourage phonetical understanding, and reading comprehension, and create enthusiasm for reading within each child. 
4. Mentoring: We believe in nurturing not only the minds but also the hearts of our youth. The program has a mentoring component that emphasizes character-building activities, leadership development, and moral education to foster responsible, empathetic, and respectful young individuals.
5. Social Skills and Coping Mechanisms: In recognition of the social and emotional challenges faced by today's youth, our after-school program incorporates the encouragement of personal responsibility, the teaching of mindfulness practices, the instruction of emotional intelligence, and social skills training, our program will equip participants with essential coping skills, empowering them to overcome obstacles and build emotional resilience for a healthier, more balanced future.
6. STEM Exploration: We are committed to promoting an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program offers hands-on STEM workshops, interactive experiments, and exposure to STEM professionals, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
7. Leadership Development: We strive to bring out the potential in each youth, providing both instruction and opportunity for the development of leadership skills. Our program will provide sessions on leadership, student-led initiatives to enhance leadership skills, and opportunities for our older students to act as mentor-leaders for the younger students.   
8. Life-Skills Development: In the face of cyclical family poverty, we want to introduce youth to the possibility of new skills to break familial patterns. Through our life-skills component, children and youth will learn financial literacy, communication skills, independence, and other skills to bring forth hope.

Our program seeks to provide children and youth with the tools to discover the potential within themselves, and to begin to realize the horizon of opportunity that awaits them. New Horizons of North Texas strives to build light, love, and hope within our children and youth.
