The Tenth Street Historic District is a freedman’s town in Oak Cliff, Dallas, founded by formerly enslaved Black people after emancipation. Despite a spate of demolition in the neighborhood, it remains one of the most intact freedmen's towns in existence. [bc] purchased a 742 square foot home built in 1923, a contributing structure to the neighborhood’s historic designation, that was at risk of being demolished due to disrepair. Over the last few years [bc] has been renovating the home. The nearly 100 year old home, which has been empty for over a decade, has required extensive structure repairs including new piers and beams and new roof rafters. [bc] is preparing to dry the house in, completely replacing the roof and all windows with historically appropriate materials. Funds are needed for the finish-out which will include installing drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and all plumbing and electrical fixtures - the final steps to make the building functional. [bc] is planning on gifting the home to the Tenth Street Residential Association to be used as a community resource center and temporary residence for community members in need.
