"Readers 2 Leaders is a literacy organization serving Dallas kindergarten and elementary students. We recognize that students who aren't on track by third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school, and low-income students are six times less likely — so we help them beat the odds. " 

Last year I volunteered as a Reading Buddy every Monday after school. These kiddos brought me so much joy and raised my awareness of the need for programs like this.

This year I joined the Board because I believe so deeply that literacy opens more doors.  Not only do struggling readers experience higher levels of stress and feelings of isolation during their school years, but they also have a dramatically increased chance of dropping out of high school and entering the criminal justice system. Adults who cannot read also experience worse health outcomes and longer-term poverty than those who are literate.
