$2,500 Goal

Cuidado Casero Foundation's goal is to inspire our Hispanic community in achieving high and becoming the next leaders in the Health care industry. CCF provides mentorship and educational programs to influence Spanish/English speaking high school students to pursue a degree in nursing-assist in closing the gap of our community needs for Spanish speaking nurses.

Our Needs

To increase the graduation of professional and skilled bilingual nurses through innovative outreach and retention initiatives to meet the critical shortage of Spanish-speaking nurses in Tarrant County and its surrounding areas. A major challenge for the nursing workforce is the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minority groups and men in the profession (The Institute of Medicine, 2011). To meet the current and future health needs of Tarrant County and to provide more culturally competent care in this community, the nursing workforce will need to increase culturally competent bilingual RNs and LVNs. Nearly 62 million U.S. residents speak a language other than English. According to United States Census Bureau (2015), and about 35.4% of the Texas population (9 million) speaks a language other than English at home, and about 83.3% of those individuals speak Spanish. About 27.4% of Fort Worth residents (190,000) speak Spanish at home, and about 53.8% of those individuals (102,220) can be considered bilingual, as they responded that they speak English "Very well." One local assessment found that 1 in 5 native speakers in Central Texas possess levels of health literacy to understand and use health information effectively.
Achieving culturally competent and client-centered care become more challenging when they have special language needs. Nurses are responsible for providing the safe and quality care to individuals regardless of their culture, religion, ethnic background or language.
Currently, bilingual nursing data is not being collected by the Texas Board of Nursing. The Hispanic Registered nursing population with only 5.1% of the North Texas Region's nursing population compared to more than 14.8% across the State. (DFWHC Foundation, 2012), and the percentage of Hispanic/Latino nurses who are bilingual is even smaller. Eliminating language barriers by increasing the number of bilingual nurses is a crucial step in providing more culturally competent and client-centered care for this community.

Mission

Empowering Hispanic students to become the leaders who will advance the healthcare of our nation and the communities we serve.

The Cuidado Casero Foundation promises to build the community by:

Promoting and providing financial support for Hispanic individuals wanting to acquire a nursing degree, providing different levels of scholarship in the nursing field.

Needs

This year, we will empower our Latino nursing students by raising funds during our NT Giving Day campaign to gift them with stethoscopes, because many Latino nursing students come from financially challenged families.

Nursing school is one of student life's most challenging but rewarding experiences. However, many students often graduate with exorbitant debts.

“Nurses must have the appropriate tools and resources necessary to perform their jobs. A quality stethoscope is built to last and minimize the burden of purchasing another when a nursing student graduates, “says Dr. Umebayashi, Vice Provost of the School of Health Sciences.

He knows, that learning how to listen with a stethoscope is easier with a quality one. Using a quality stethoscope makes a difference in nurses' ability to listen to quiet and low-frequency sounds of the human body, which is essential to identify abnormal anatomical and physiological conditions.

As many Latino nursing students have financial challenges, we will use our NT Giving Day campaign to raise funds for stethoscopes for them.

As a nursing student, Dr. Carmen Santiago says, a stethoscope is the first signature symbol of becoming a nurse. This is a key tool for doing a comprehensive assessment of the patient from head to toe. In fact, nurses use it continuously throughout their shifts, from beginning to end," says Dr. Santiago.

A quality stethoscope for nursing students is the first step toward feeling prepared for the clinical endeavors, they will face. A stethoscope also symbolizes nurses' commitment to care for patients’ health while listening with their ears and touch. Please help students with bright futures have an appropriate learning and caring tool.
