FunkyTown Food Project envisions a world where youth are active leaders, diverse communities feel connected to the land and each other, and everyone has access to fresh, local, healthy, affordable food.
Urban Roots NTX is a local nonprofit that utilizes sustainable food as a powerful tool to build a stronger, more integrated, and healthier community. Through Urban Roots NTX, the FunkyTown Food Project (FTFP) was established to cultivate leadership skills in high school youth through food and farming by transforming the lives of young people to inspire, engage, and nourish the community. The farming experience program is conducted at Conundrum Farms in Crowley, Texas, under the direction of the Executive Director. The FTFP motivates the students to appreciate the outdoors at the Farm and their community while gaining experience in agriculture and crop growing to assist our local food ecosystem. Most centrally, this organization seeks to build an informed, engaged, and healthy community with a robust understanding of food access, food security, and food sovereignty. Urban Roots NTX advances local access to fresh produce while simultaneously providing a space for collaboration and learning. Participating FTFP youth come from diverse neighborhoods, and cross racial, socio-economic and geography. We want everyone to know that “a better future is ours to grow.”
FunkyTown Food Project seeks to create powerful change that is rooted in community. We work to uplift the community by removing barriers to food access and support local priorities established in partnership with residents, community groups, nonprofits, local government, and local businesses.
The FunkyTown Food Project’s mission is to cultivate leadership skills in high school youth through food and farming, transforming the lives of young people to inspire, engage, and nourish the community. We create a thoughtful and productive community of youth and adults from diverse backgrounds who work together to build a sustainable food system. Our community produces healthy food for residents of the city and suburbs, provides youth leadership opportunities, and inspires and supports others to create change in their own communities.
FunkyTown Food Project is a 6-week program for Tarrant County students that aims to cultivate understandings of leadership through sustainable agriculture. Students learn about and advance food access by participating in on-site farming of produce for farmer’s markets or local food banks.
Funds will be utilized for items such as youth stipends and equitable wages; Farm-to-Market program development; Work materials such as t-shirts, caps, gloves, seeds, hand tools, mulch; Transportation for interns; Operational salaries; and professional services.
