We are interested in reaching under-served population of Dallas, in particular we are working in West and South Dallas. We have created a theater on wheel/teatro ambulante in the style of COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE (seventeen century actors travelling all over Europe to present in the town squares and in the royal palaces) with contemporary themes that reaches low income population. We believe that theater belongs to all and represents a fundamental part in the development of an individual. We have been very well received in public parks, recreation centers, libraries and low income retirement homes and asked to come back.During this difficult year we have moved completely in open spaces for rehearsal as well as to present our original production: Icaruses' Fugue. Two personal stories of two women meeting difficulties in their life and able to overcome them. Furthermore we have presented on the street of Jefferson Blvd. MASCARA al MIO CARDIO an attempt to communicate with the passersby. We have created three productions about our concerns for the planet with aim of stimulating more love toward it. Intima Terra / intimate Earth, SerTerra/ BeEarth and Vida Compartida/ Shared life. Figures from indigenous cultures such as Maya (Mexico), Hopi (Arizona), Mamos (Columbia) and Icaras (Amazonia) express their way of living in tune with Nature, in contrast to scenes of destruction and abuse of the Planet by the western civilizations. There is no social justice without a healthy environment for all. Although these problems are widely exposed, it is important to redefine and to reach any section of the community. The past year we have also produced Los Llevamos Dentro an adaptation of the work of Eusebio Calonge , a Spanish author .
Six characters, six nondescript beings of a fantasy circus, raise the great questions of humankind and the myths of existence, with parodied tragedies, through humor and the grotesque. Six human beings in search of a way of life transporting their props on a food shopping card reminiscent of homeless people. At the same time we are preparing an original play for the Day of the Dead ( Dia de Muertos) : Bailando con la Muerte/ Dancing with Death. Since 2007 Teatro Flor Candela have been producing a play for this unique holiday celebrated across several Latin American countries. This year the production is a collection of personal stories related to death as told by Teatro Flor Candela performers. we hope to see you at the show!!!!
Our Needs
We need support for costumes, props, venues renting and volunteers for the marketing. Thank you!!
Preserve and disseminate the knowledge, appreciation and understanding of Latin American cultures through theatre, literature and educational programs.
The major expenditures are usually space rental, insurance and props. We would love to reach $5000 for this year and cover our storage rental and rehearsal space rental. We are also always in search of volunteers for the performances .
The word "teatro" (theater) comes from the Greek verb ϑέατρον, meaning:" I observe or watch". This sentiment is at the heart of Teatro Flor Candela's mission: to observe the world and reflect the experiences of humans, plants, and animals for others to observe and watch. In this way, we affirm the inextricable links among all living things, and through our work uphold the importance of equality, justice, and peace for all mankind.
