The Society is an all-volunteer group dedicated to protecting and maintaining the Spring Creek Forest in Garland. The Society was formed in 1989 by an agreement between Dallas County Open Spaces, the City of Garland and Garland Parks and Recreation Department to help maintain and preserve Spring Creek Forest Preserve and Greenbelt.
Guided walks and volunteer projects are led by experts, and we have a monthly speaker series on topics relevant to the Preserve. Most activities are free and open to the public. The Society needs people like you who know that protecting precious natural resources such as Spring Creek Forest is not a luxury, but a necessity. With your help, the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest can continue maintaining and preserving the preserve.
To safeguard the future of Spring Creek Forest and Park Preserve, the Society engages community volunteers in hands-on conservation projects and provides education about the importance of protecting this irreplaceable natural treasure.
Although the Garland Parks and Recreation Department is generally responsible for the maintenance and well-being of the Preserve and surrounding greenbelt, the Preserve is a sensitive ecosystem that needs a different type of maintenance than most of the other Garland parks. Therefore, the Preservation Society was created to advise on, plan and perform much of the specialized work. The Society works closely with the Garland Parks Department to ensure agreement on the types of activities that should be accomplished.
We schedule a monthly work session from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month, September through May. It might not sound like enough time (and in truth it is not) but it is amazing how much ten to twenty people can accomplish in just two hours. That is twenty to forty hours of work.
