Pastors for Texas Children supports public schools by initiating school assistance programs with local congregations, promoting social justice for children, and advancing legislation that puts the needs of Texas children, families, and communities first. With the assault on public education, PTC remains convicted that we must help local congregations and local public schools create strategic partnerships that will neutralize this negativity and create a general foundation of support for public education.

The public school is the only institution of society that accepts every child, no questions asked. This unconditional acceptance and affirmation of children is the moral feature that undergirds PTC’s focus on public education. “As a Center of Love, the local public school is where children are fed, taught, protected, understood, and affirmed,” says Rev. Charles Foster Johnson, PTC Executive Director.

PTC Programs:

CONNECTING OUR SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES

PTC helps build relationships between faith communities and neighborhood schools.  PTC teaches our faith leaders how to serve the schools through tutoring, appreciation events or other acts of service deemed valuable by the school leaders.  PTC also teaches our faith leaders how they can effectively advocate for public schools at the local and state levels.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH LEGISLATORS

Whether the legislature is in session or not, it's always a good time to connect with local and state officials. PTC builds those relationships throughout the legislative session by conducting numerous meetings and introduces faith and education leaders to these officials.  PTC can aid in sending emails, making phone calls, or in-person visits, and communicate why public education matters to us all!

COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION

PTC’s communications share what is happening in the news with regards to public education.  Our PTC supporters are consistently made aware of events happening throughout local communities in Texas, the good and the not so good.  At the beginning of the school year we send daily prayers for our schools and show appreciation to our teachers by offering prayer and thanks during appreciation weeks.  PTC also submits opinion pieces to newspapers and encourages pastors and faith leaders to do the same. Check our blog to read some of them.

Mission

Pastors for Texas Children is a ministry that serves Texas’ neighborhood public schools through prayer, service, and advocacy. We support our schools by initiating school assistance programs with local congregations, promoting social justice for children, and advancing legislation that puts the needs of Texas children, families, and communities first.

Needs

We need your support! Pastors for Texas Children is not just another education organization. We are an independent ministry, not beholden to any special interest group, political party, or church office. We believe in local democracy, cooperation across lines of difference, and organizing to support public education opportunities for Texas children. We see prayer, direct service, and legislative advocacy as parts of an integral whole, not separate initiatives. We offer legislative and community service solutions that guard the values of all Texans.

Equity Statement

Pastors for Texas Children believes that public education is a human right, a constitutional guarantee, and a central part of God’s plan for human flourishing. When this sacred trust and provision of God’s common good comes under attack by the forces of privatization, we respond with prayer, service, and advocacy. We work for a day when all pastors, all faith leaders, and all people of faith and good will support free and fairly funded public schools for ALL of God’s children.
