Overview:
Parent's Step Ahead (PSA) was founded in 2006 by Lupita Colmenero, publisher of El Hispano News, the oldest Hispanic newspaper in North Texas, serving the Hispanic community of Dallas and Fort Worth since 1986, to address the lack of awareness in education that affects underserved families, about the importance of parental involvement. Parental involvement is essential for educational success, and to close the 'achievement gap' that is so prevalent in low-income communities. PSA focuses on the smallest circle of influence a child has, their family. Countless studies have proved that the more the parents are involved in their children's lives and education, the greater the likelihood their children will have a successful future.
Our vision for 2018 and beyond is to offer the PPC in every at-risk school district in Texas, and partner with surrounding states to offer the training in every school that wants it. PSA is committed to this vision for the PPC. PSA is currently seeking support for this project through grants from corporations and private foundations. As we expand our service and implementation, the needs for HR and funds to cover expenses become greater. We would also like to be able to launch a marketing campaign on parental and family empowerment to unveil the power parents have to help their children succeed academically.
Mission
To recognize, educate, enable and empower parents to take a proactive role in the educational and personal development of their children.
Vision:
To increase every child's opportunity to reach his or her personal full potential by providing education and support, to empower parents and families, particularly the underserved and underrepresented.
