Denton County LOSS Team: Transforming Grief Into a Path of Hope 🌟
Denton County LOSS Team (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) is an extraordinary volunteer-driven initiative under Denton County MHMR. Launched in 2015 in partnership with the Medical Examiner’s office, this team of around 22 volunteers—comprised of suicide-loss survivors and mental health professionals—rises to the most critical moments following a suicide in our community.
What We Do
Immediate, on-scene support: When a suicide occurs, our team responds within hours to provide compassionate presence and crisis resources, ensuring families are not alone in their most vulnerable time .
Long-term postvention care: We follow up regularly—within the first week, month, and up to a year—through visits, phone calls, and check-ins to help reduce isolation and the risk of additional self-harm .
Free grief support resources: From comfort kits for children (stuffed animals, blankets) to guidance books for adults, and even funding for biohazard cleanup, we ease the immediate burden on families.
Our Impact
Since inception, we’ve supported nearly 1,900 individuals affected by suicide, offering timely postvention care and reducing the likelihood of further tragedies.
The team’s involvement significantly speeds up access to grief support—on average, from 4.5 years down to just 39 days when LOSS is involved
Importantly, no survivors who received our direct intervention have died by suicide—a testament to the life-saving nature of our work
Why We Need You This North Texas Giving Day (Sept 19, 2025)
Our annual fundraiser supports:
The creation and distribution of comfort/resource kits ($10–$64 per packet)
Ongoing volunteer training and deployment costs
Critical biohazard cleanup for families reeling from a tragedy
Your support on North Texas Giving Day will help ensure every Denton County survivor of suicide loss is met with care, resources, and a guiding hand through their grief—serving as a bridge from devastation to healing.Join us in standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Denton families. Your investment is not just a donation—it’s a lifeline.
The Denton County LOSS Team (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) exists to provide immediate, compassionate, and ongoing support to individuals and families who have lost a loved one to suicide. Through timely on-scene response, personalized grief resources, and follow-up care, we help survivors navigate the earliest stages of loss with dignity, connection, and hope—ensuring that no one in Denton County faces suicide loss alone.
Denton County LOSS Team is asking for funds to continue their postvention efforts. With your help, LOSS is able to provide free resources to all suicide survivors to assist them in their suicide grief journey. Whether that is providing comfort on-scene by giving out water, blankets, or stuffed animals to the children or books and pamphlets to help survivors navigate through this unimaginable time. Resource packets for one adult can range anywhere between $27.89-$63.81 depending on the type of relationship this individual had with the deceased. Children’s resource packets are anywhere between $9.99-$49.89 based on age and needs.
Denton LOSS Team is also searching for eager volunteers that are either a mental health professional or a seasoned suicide survivor that is interested in helping newly bereaved suicide survivors.
Lastly, our team is asking for you to spread awareness of LOSS and our mission in order to reach all suicide survivors in Denton County. Thanks to our Medical Examiners, LOSS is able to reach individuals affected by the suicides that have occurred in Denton County. For those who have experienced their loved one's suicide outside the county, we have no way of knowing in order to provide support.
Denton County LOSS Team is honored to provide such services to our community and grateful for your contributions that make it possible.
Denton County LOSS Team's strives to prevent additional suicides in families that have already experienced a suicide.
